11th Matriculation: Full speech of the university’s President
Address by the President of Knutsford University College at the 11th Matriculation Ceremony
(Prof. Anthony K. Ahiawodzi)
Mr. Chairman, The Pro-Chancellor, Bishop John K. Essel, The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, The Vice-Chancellor of the University for Development Studies, Council Members, The Directors of Knutsford University College, The Registrar, Members of Convocation, Distinguished Guests, Senior and Junior Staff, Parents, Matriculants, Ladies and Gentlemen.
I also join the Pro-Chancellor in welcoming all of you to the 11th Matriculation Ceremony of Knutsford University College, otherwise known as the Royal University of Africa.
Knutsford University College is one of the prestigious Private University Colleges in Ghana established in 2007. It is affiliated with the University of Ghana, and the University for Development Studies, and it is accredited by the National Accreditation Board (now Ghana Tertiary Education Commission – GTEC). Knutsford University College (Knutsford) has two campuses. They are the East Legon (Accra), and the Ghana Bible College (Kumasi).
Mr. Chairman, the need for quality education in the growth and development of industry and civil society is becoming more and more important than ever. Thus, education should not be limited to only the acquisition of knowledge, skills and abilities, but it should be the application of these vital resources to meet the needs of industry and societies. To this end, Knutsford University College aims at improving on lives and well-being of its students for a successful future.
Specifically, Knutsford shall provide first-class university education to all of you, to excel, to lead and to serve as responsible scholars, professionals and global citizens. Our programmes in business, science, technology, nursing, communications, economics, liberal arts and education are well-tailored to meet the demands of industry and commerce both locally and internationally.
We place greater emphasis on the quality of academic work and general university experience. We cherish the quality of our teaching and curriculum content and our multicultural ethos. We provide excellent facilities to our students: cutting-edge technology, modern teaching spaces, small class sizes, and committed student learning support, backed by a dedicated and well-educated faculty.
We constantly strive to meet the unique challenges that face students as they look to assume leadership roles in Ghana, and across the world. Our well-prepared graduates are well equipped with vital communication skills and creative thinking abilities. They have deep practical knowledge in their chosen fields of study and an awareness of global perspectives. They are articulate and analytically-minded, with the confidence to take their place on the global stage.
Fresh students, you would quickly realise that you are in the right academic institution. Mr. Chairman, in view of the increasing number of youth unemployment, particularly graduate unemployment in Ghana, the Management of Knutsford University College has from the 2019/2020 academic year introduced a mandatory Practical Entrepreneurship course as Part 2 of the theory component. This Practical Entrepreneurship course is in collaboration with the Student Entrepreneurship Initiatives under the National Entrepreneurship Initiative Plan (NEIP) of the Ministry of Business Development, as well as the Wadwhani Foundation of USA Entrepreneurship programme among others.
The course will empower students with an entrepreneurial mindset and business skills leading to superior job prospects, intrapreneurship and long-term entrepreneurship. I strongly entreat all of you to take this Entrepreneurship course seriously.
Matriculants Statitics
Mr. Chairman, we admitted 372 fresh undergraduate and postgraduate students for the 2020/2021 academic year for both Accra and Kumasi Campuses. This number is made up of 163 males and 209 females, representing 43.8% and 56.2%, respectively. This is the number being matriculated today.
I am specifically happy to inform you that during the 2020/2021 academic year, our Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme with specialisations in Accounting, Finance, Marketing, and Human Resource Management has taken off with 13 Fresh students. Mr. Chairman, an important observation of this year’s intake of students with regard to their background like that of last year, reveals that Ghanaian students (in the majority) have come from all parts of the country.
This development points to the fact that Knutsford University College is gradually growing. The number of foreign students continues to be a small percentage; about 1%. Mr. Chairman, the COVID-19 Pandemic world over including Ghana has necessitated the adoption of new strategies of delivering teaching and learning. Knutsford University College has responded positively with a blended technology, comprising Face to Face and On-Line methods. We entreat you to embrace them passionately, especially the Online approach. For, Knutsford University College is determined to become a fully-Technological Distance learning University in the near future. As you could see, Management with the assistance of the Ghana Government has procured and installed all the necessary COVID-19 Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) at the vantage points of the University campus. We entreat you to take advantage and observe strictly all the COVID-19 protocols at all times
Discipline
Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, permit me at this point to sound the following pieces of advice to our new students:
Discipline is very key in this institution. You must obey the Authorities, Faculty, and Staff of Knutsford University College as well as your fellow students.
- You must study hard at all times.
- You must be punctual and regular for all your lectures.
- You must take part in all class exercises, discussions, and projects.
- You must manage your time appropriately in order to balance academic work with extracurricular activities.
You must always think critically and constructively in order to add value to yourselves - You must always dress decently on campus and outside of campus. As Royals, you are always Royals.
Furthermore, I entreat you to constantly reflect soberly on the words of the Matriculation Oath which you will soon swear. The words summarise all that is required of you to be successful in this academic environment as a student.
CONCLUSION
We thank you for choosing Knutsford University College, and you will never regret it all. We wish you the best in your studies and be assured of our maximum support. For us in Knutsford University College, “Students’ Success is Supreme” to us.
Thank you.
